Spatial transformation

Instead of swinging a mini-golf club, people are now busy smashing laps with a wide variety of roller sports equipment. With the planning and construction of the Pump Track Olten, Vast Trails in cooperation with the project group from the Olten Bike Club, was able to bring new life into the former and overgrown mini-golf course. In a construction period of around 2.5 months, the mini golf course was transformed into a modern Pump Track and recreation facility.

Differentiated design

The new system is intended to stand out from the many other pump tracks in particular due to its holistic experience. There is not just one seemingly endless lap that everyone has to get the grips with. At the heart of the facility are three clearly defined tracks (Jump Line, Pump Track, Kids Track), each with different levels of difficulty for different target groups. The Kids Track is flat and forgiving. The berms are a maximum of 70 cm high and rather flat (40-45°), the waves and rollers are smooth and round. Nestled in the heart of the facility is the Pump Track: the higher and steeper curves (up to 120cm and 55°) enable higher speeds. The creative eye will find various jumps and hidden transfers, also in combination with the adjacent Jump Line. This meets the constantly growing demand for jumps. A mix of flat, steep and twisting jumps and differences in amplitude ensure a “trail-like” riding experience. The three different tracks build progressively on each other and thus enable individual development from beginner to expert. In this way, different needs are satisfied in a small space and user flows are safely managed during rush hours. The spacious recreation areas and a separate snack bar with kiosk and rental bikes complement the offer perfectly.

Mario Schmutziger, Co-Initiator Pump Track Olten

From the outset, the Olten Pump Track was conceived as a magnet for young and old; as an infrastructure with a high fun factor for everyone and for continuous learning, even for professionals. The years of experience of the Vast crew have helped us to turn this purpose into reality, from conception to planning to execution. Their creativity and attention to detail in all phases have made this “first” probably the most versatile and modern pump track in Switzerland. The local population and the national bike community are delighted – mission accomplished!

Intense planning process

Vast Trails was already included in the project development during the site evaluation and was therefore able to provide technical support for the project from the very beginning. Once the location was finalized, several workshops – both on-site and online – were held to jointly define the needs and functions of the facility. Different options were designed, further developed and refined, but also discarded until the final design emerged. The project group realized that sufficient planning resources definitely pay off in such a cost-intensive project.

Cooperation with local companies

Thanks to the ideal collaboration with the civil engineering company STA (rough grading and construction machinery), Baustoffzentrum Olten/Zofingen BOZ (materials), Fischer Metallbau (start ramp), volunteers from Bike Club Olten and Barmettler Gartenbau, the green areas were already resplendent in lush green colors by the opening date and the facility was able to open on time and on budget on 11 June 2022. We couldn’t have wished for a better client for our first Vast Pump Track than the top project group from the Olten Bike Club!

Popular local recreation facility with supra-regional appeal

The Pump Track Olten is a popular local recreational facility and excursion destination for kids and young people, families and roller sports enthusiasts. The jump line is particularly popular with the mountain bike community, as the asphalt surface makes jumping possible even in damp and cold weather conditions. The facility is also actively used for various cycling activities such as school sports, vacation passes, bike camps and youth training at the Olten Bike Club.

Severin Schindler, Project Manager and Co.Owner Vast Trails

Revitalizing areas that are no longer used but conform to zoning regulations is always an exciting planning task and is also absolutely appropriate in terms of spatial planning. I particularly enjoyed the planning process. With creativity and care, various options were developed, tested and compared together with the project owner, always taking into account function, user management and accessibility as well as what needed to be preserved, such as the numerous groups of trees or the bistro building.
